A Morning of Inspiration
Our Winter Showcase took place on March 10th, and it was one of the most memorable events in our school’s young history. Over 80 family members, community partners, and prospective families gathered to witness what our learners had accomplished during the fall and winter semesters.
Spark Studio Highlights
Our youngest learners kicked off the morning with a presentation of their “Animal Architects” quest. Over the past six weeks, Spark squads had studied how animals build — from beaver dams to bird nests to ant colonies — and then designed their own animal-inspired shelters using natural and recycled materials.
The results were stunning. One squad built a model beaver lodge from sticks, mud, and stones that was nearly three feet tall. Another created a woven bird nest large enough for a child to sit inside, using techniques they learned from watching videos of weaver birds at work. The pride on these young faces as they explained their engineering decisions to adult visitors was worth the price of admission alone.
Discovery Studio Highlights
The Discovery Studio showcased their “History Makers” quest, which challenged each learner to research an unsung figure from history, write a biographical essay, and create a museum-quality exhibit panel telling that person’s story.
The learners chose remarkable subjects: a Black mathematician who contributed to the space program before computers existed, a teenage girl who disguised herself as a boy to fight in the Civil War, a deaf inventor whose creations we still use today, and many more. Each panel featured original illustrations, primary source photographs, and a QR code linking to an audio recording of the learner reading their essay aloud.
Parents and visitors moved through the exhibit in hushed reverence, pausing at each panel to read and listen. Several visitors commented that the quality of research and writing would be impressive for high school students, let alone ten and eleven-year-olds.
Adventure Studio Highlights
The Adventure Studio presented their “Design Thinking” quest, which asked each squad to identify a problem affecting someone in their community and design a solution using the full design thinking process — empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test.
One squad designed a sensory-friendly waiting room kit for medical offices, inspired by a squadmate’s younger sibling who has autism. Another created a neighborhood lending library specifically curated for new immigrant families, with books in multiple languages and a welcome guide translated into four languages. A third squad developed a mobile app prototype for elderly community members to request help with tasks like grocery shopping and technology troubleshooting.
Each squad presented their project using professional-quality slide decks and demonstrated their prototypes live. The Q&A sessions were rigorous — audience members asked tough questions about feasibility, scalability, and user testing, and our learners answered with confidence and nuance.
Community Response
The feedback from families and visitors was overwhelming. One grandmother, attending her first Acton event, told us through tears: “I have never seen children so proud of their own work. This is what school should be.” A local business owner who attended as a community judge for the Discovery exhibit offered to sponsor the printing of the biographical panels for permanent display at the public library.
Perhaps the most meaningful feedback came from the learners themselves. During the closing reflection circle, one Adventure learner said: “The showcase is not about showing off. It is about showing what you can do when you care about something enough to work really hard on it.”
